Watch Private Practice - ABC tops ratings with 'Grey's,' 'Private Practice'

Fox, CBS solid with baseball, repeats

Behind the strength of No. 1-rated "Grey's Anatomy" and spinoff "Private Practice," ABC took the Thursday night primetime race. Fox, which aired the fifth game of the American League Championship Series, was second, and CBS, despite airing two repeats, came in third.

According to early estimates from Nielsen, "Grey's" (5.2 rating/14 share in the 18-49 demo, 14.6 million viewers) was dominant. Sandwiched between steady 8 p.m. freshman drama "FlashForward" (3.0/9, 9.8m) and "Private Practice" (3.7/10, 9.9m), the Alphabet not only won in the demo but also edged CBS in overall viewers.

Of course, the Eye would quickly counter that both "CSI" (2.1/6, 10m) and "The Mentalist" (2.7/8, 11.3) were reruns. Net's reality staple "Survivor" (4.0/11) was the most-watched show of the evening with 12.8 million viewers.

Numbers are sure to go up once they become official, but Fox's early tallies on the Yankees-Angels game were 3.3/9, with 10.3 million viewers. Network projects that the game will be the highest ALCS since the seventh-game matchup between the Red Sox and Indians in 2007.

At 9 p.m., "The Office" (4.2/11, 8.5m) continues to fare well for NBC, and the laffer defeated "Grey's Anatomy" in 18-34 (pending the baseball game final results). "30 Rock" (3.2/8, 6.6m) was up slightly from its premiere a week ago.

"Community" (1.9/6, 5.1) was on average for the Peacock since being moved to 8 p.m., but the Joel McHale comedy hasn't done as well as when it was scheduled at 9:30. "Parks & Recreation" (2.1/6, 4.9m) was also on par, as was "The Jay Leno Show" (1.6/5, 4.9m).

CW offered repeats of "The Vampire Diaries" (0.9/3, 2.3m) and "Supernatural" (0.8/2, 1.8m).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 4.0/11; Fox, 3.3/9; CBS, 3.0/8; NBC, 2.4/7; Univision, 1.4/4; CW, 0.8/2.

In total viewers: ABC, 11.48 million; CBS, 11.45 million; Fox, 10.34 million; NBC, 5.87 million; Univision, 3.54 million; CW, 2.07 million.
